FILMMAKER SPOTLIGHT: ZW WHEELER

What do you love about movies?

“I love film because, out of all other artistic mediums, the filmmaker had the broadest range of tools to engage the viewer. A film is a symphony, hundreds of thousands of paintings, a theatrical performance and a novel, woven into a glorious tapestry, truly unlike any other work.”

This was your first attempt in making a film and writing one, what encouraged you to go forth with making your film The Trail?

“I saw the project as an opportunity to get my feet wet. I've always loved film, and I've wanted to tell stories through the medium for many years, in fact I wrote the story for The Trail more than two years before I even considered attending Salisbury or studying Film. I was a bit apprehensive about the whole endeavor, mostly because of my inexperience, but I took great solace in the encouragement of professors, family and friends who thought the project would be a success. It also got easier as more people agreed to work on the project. It's incredible to have strangers give up their time and money to work with you.”

Funding a film is difficult, how did you go about financing The Trail?

“With the Help of Dr. Judith Pike I was able to secure a generous grant from the Fulton School of Liberal Arts here are at Salisbury. This grant, supplemented by small donations from friends and family, as well as cast and crew members, made up the bulk of the budget.”

What was your favorite moment of making the movie?

“There were a lot of awesome moments that would spoil the film were they described, but outside of those, I truly enjoyed listening to Richard Kidney's various voice impressions. He has a wide vocal range.”

Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years? What kind of films will you be making, and what role do you want to play in making them (i.e. Director, writer, producer, DP, etc.)?

“In an ideal world, I'll be making more films, hopefully with larger budgets and longer production timelines. I wrote, directed and was the Director of photography on this project, and I really enjoyed the degree of creative control that came with all those roles. That being said, I also loved collaborating with Josh Lynch, the assistant director and editor, as well as Richard. It's always a pleasure to see your ideas framed from another perspective.”
